Make the most of spring opportunities

Although recent weather patterns have not been conducive to performing a lot of outdoor work, the forecast is for more promising sunshine and warmer temperatures in the near future.

That means that Estevan property owners will soon have no real excuses for not getting out into their yards and gardens to do a little more clean-up work.

Whether or not the Energy City gets to win the coveted Golden Garbage Can, it's always a good thing to do some spring cleaning inside and out. It's good for physical and mental health and it's another sure sign of spring. Once again lawn hoses and ornaments are put back into their rightful place and the garden earth is turned again, ready to accept a new round of flowers or produce.

And while it is recognized that City owned properties such as front boulevards, green spaces and park areas are the ultimate responsibility of civic employees, there is no reason why local taxpayers can't chip in once in awhile to become concerned stewards of the common land. After all, we do pay taxes to create these spaces and if City employees can't always get around to doing the chores as quickly as we would like to see them done, then maybe it might be a good idea for us to pull a weed or two from the curbs during our morning or evening walks.

Perhaps we can stoop down for a little aerobic exercise to pick up that abandoned soft drink can or fast food wrapper and tuck it into the small disposal bag we'll carry with us so the debris can be deposited in the next convenient garbage can, or taken home for recycling.

We can cut, trim, rake, turn, polish, paint and scrub for an additional 15 to 30 minutes a day for the next few days to acknowledge this special rite of spring.

It is guaranteed to make us feel better, and it really won't matter whether we win a golden can or not. If we do, that's simply a bonus prize.
