As we take our first few steps into 2012, there are many reasons to be optimistic about the year ahead.

It's hard to say which disappointing finish was a bigger choke. Last year, an American world junior team that was more stacked on paper than Yorkton's peewee AA team lost to Canada in the semis.

The Editor: Canadians have every reason to celebrate our country's recent decision to withdraw from the Kyoto Protocol. Our refusal to play the role of sucker at a United Nations poker game might even send a message to the world's real polluters.

The way we have decided to inhabit Saskatchewan is a blessing and a curse. As we climb into 2012, I look around and can't help but wonder what we're going to do in the next 10 to 15 years to address the disparity of population disbursement.

Looking at where Premier Brad Wall's Saskatchewan Party now sits, it's hard to imagine it having many struggles in 2012. Its 64-per-cent and 49-seat win in the Nov. 7 election obviously gives it an unquestionable mandate to govern as it sees fit.

I was so looking forward to writing my column this month because I had a whole arsenal of topics to pick from that people have stopped me to discuss. I had even done several mini columns to remind me what was on the minds of my readers.

The idea is good but . . .

A lot of us spend a lot of time complaining about the things we don't have, and not a lot of time appreciating what we do have, this is something I'm often guilty of doing.

The Editor, After reading Jordan Baker's article entitled "Alleged tax evaders say act is illegal" on December 7, I was thinking it was a nice unbiased news story about the trial of the Desautels.
