Vernon Solie was born at Radville, SK on September 18, 1935 to Olaf and Anges (Brothen) Solie. Vernon and his twin sister Verna, were the youngest of seven children. Vernon was raised on the family farm south of Lake Alma, SK. He had some health issues during the first year or so, but it wasn’t long before he was running circles around his twin sister. Vernon attended school at Sandoff School for the first 3 months of grade 1, when the family bought a house in Lake Alma. He completed his grade 8 at Birds Hill School in Lake Alma. Vernon was very athletic and was very involved in curling and softball. He won many prizes and trophies. One was a pin displaying an eight ender which was won in a local bonspiel. He enjoyed playing sports as well as watching and driving his children to their sporting events. In his later years much time was spent watching sports on TV, especially the Blue Jays. Vernon had a great sense of humor and a quick wit. He enjoyed a good joke. In his younger years he enjoyed teasing his mother and sisters and upsetting them with his pranks. Vernon worked on the family farm and also farmed on his own for awhile.  From 1951 through 1964, he had various jobs such as working for a local farmer, trucking, road grader with the Department of Highways, private contractors, Redi Mix Company, Saskatchewan Hospital in Weyburn doing maintenance for 2 years, and then returned to road grading. In 1964 he started working at Beaubier Co-op as a truck driver and was the manager for a time. Again the road work called him back and he worked on the grader for the Rural Municipalities of Lake Alma and Oungre until 1993 at which time an injury forced him to retire. Vernon’s hobbies included carpentry (he made a replica of the Solie farm house where he grew up for each of his siblings, as well as a replica of the Offet farm house and the Lake Alma Post Office using wood siding from the original buildings), gardening (he grew Sunflowers over 13 feet tall with huge drooping heads), card playing and travelling. Vernon married Sharon Offet on June 25, 1960 at Lake Alma, SK.  They lived in Weyburn, Radville and several other places wherever his work led them to.  They moved to Beaubier in 1963 and remained there until January, 2016 when due to health reasons, he moved to Golden Heritage Apartments in Radville and in December, 2016 he moved to Bison Manor Apartments in Weyburn, SK. Vernon and Sharon have three children: Candy, Wendy, and Warren. Vernon was a loving father to his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Vernon wasn’t without struggles in his life, especially in his middle age years.  Those struggles were conquered when he turned them over to the Lord, the One who could deliver him from them. Vernon developed a strong faith and later in years spent much time in prayers for his loved ones. Vernon was a kind, gentle, humble man. He always put others first. Blessed be his memory. A Service of Remembrance for Vernon was held on Tuesday, January 2, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. from Zion Lutheran Church, Weyburn, SK with Pastor Daryl Solie officiating. Honorary Pallbearers were all in attendance.  Lunch was held at Zion Lutheran Church with interment following at Saron Cemetery, Lake Alma, SK.
