Weyburn's Muslim community shares significance of Ramadan at supper

The Muslim community of Weyburn celebrated the end of Ramadan with an Iftar dinner on Sunday evening.

WEYBURN – The Muslim community of Weyburn celebrated the end of Ramadan with an Iftar dinner on Sunday evening, and invited members of the public to partake with them as they broke the fast of the past month.

The dinner was set up at Knox Hall by Southeast Newcomer Services, and settlement advisor Deniza Blakaj Krasniqi helped to organize the supper event, with the local members of the Muslim community providing homemade traditional dishes for the supper.

An explanation was provided to the gathering with the meaning of Ramadan and what it means to an individual Muslim, along with the significance of breaking the fast and celebrating with the Iftar supper. Young children distributed Ramadan stickers to everyone at the event.

Prayer mats were set up and those who wished to pray were given the opportunity to, then fhe feast was available to everyone to take part in.

According to Krasniqi, the dishes provided included Goulash, Butter Chicken, Chicken Jalferazi, Chickpea curry, Goat curry with spinach, Chicken Byrijani, White rice, Brik, Couscous, Chicken soup, Chicken pasta, Pastry stuffed with chicken, Tuna salad, Olivier Salad Tuna Pasta salad, Tarator – (Cold cucumber soup) and steam veggies, along with a selection of desserts such as dates, chocolate mousse and rice pudding.
