ESTEVAN — The Estevan Community Wellness Committee continues to offer its free community board game nights for residents of all ages.

A press release from the committee says the activities are fun, welcoming events designed to strengthen community bonds, reduce social isolation and promote intergenerational friendships — with a special focus on creating meaningful opportunities for the community to connect.

“Loneliness and isolation can have real impacts on both mental and physical health for many people,” states the release. “Opportunities to socialize can become fewer with age, especially for those who live alone or have limited mobility. Board game nights offer a relaxed, accessible way to meet new people, share laughter and keep the mind active — all while enjoying the timeless joy of a good game.”

“Social interaction is just as important for healthy aging as exercise or nutrition,” said Shelly Veroba, the committee’s co-chairwoman and manager of Creighton Lodge. “When seniors come together to play board games, they’re not just having fun, they’re building friendships, stimulating their minds and feeling like a valued part of the community.”

Attendees, including seniors, are encouraged to bring a favourite game or simply join in and learn something new. Members of the Estevan Wellness Committee and other participants are always happy to help explain or teach unfamiliar games.

“I had such a great time meeting new people and playing a few new games. Everyone should come out and have some fun,” said Joan Francis, who recently participated in game night.

The next board game night will be Aug. 19 at 6 p.m. at the Southeast Innovation Business Development Centre, located on Ninth Avenue behind Affinity Credit Union.

Board game nights will continue on the third Tuesday of each month. The gatherings from September to December will be held at the Estevan Market Mall at 6 p.m.

The Estevan Community Wellness Committee says it believes that when different generations sit down together around the same table, the whole community benefits. These board game nights are not just about rolling dice; the committee says they’re about rolling away barriers and building a stronger, more connected Estevan.

Residents are encouraged to follow the Estevan Community Wellness Facebook page for more details on these and other events.
