More than 170 volunteers fanned out throughout Estevan to complete a variety of projects during the day.

ESTEVAN — People in the Estevan area showed support for others in the community during the United Way Estevan's annual Day of Caring on May 28.

A little more than 170 volunteers helped out during the day. Local businesses and organizations allowed their employees to help out. Area residents and United Way board members also worked on projects.

"We're always just so blessed by the people that come out to help on the Day of Caring," said Wendy Gustafson, who co-chairs the Day of Caring committee with Shelly Veroba. "Obviously this community rallies around the United Way in so many ways at the telethon, so it's our way to give back to the community when we get to the Day of Caring."

Forty-five projects were completed, Gustafson said. Still, they helped out a lot of people who are on their list each year, and also helped some people for the first time.

"We have a lot of people doing yardwork, mowing lawns," said Gustafson. "We have people on ladders cleaning out eavestroughs, working up little garden spots, putting flowers in."

Others tackled inside work like washing windows, and cleaning ovens and ceiling fans.

Thirty-five cards were distributed to individual projects recipients and others in the community. Included were hand-written messages and pictures coloured by children of United Way board members.

Lunch was served to volunteers and project recipients at the Estevan Alliance Church.

Gustafson said it was a beautiful day, and the United Way couldn't have asked for better conditions. She thanked everyone who came out and helped, and said the United Way and its Day of Caring would not be the same without the volunteers.

"The people that receive the help are very, very grateful, and continue to give thanks for it, so it's a win-win situation," said Gustafson.
