CARLYLE — One of the two men accused in connection with a homicide on the White Bear First Nations last year is now charged with first-degree murder.
Dwayne Maxie made an appearance on the charge June 11 in Carlyle Provincial Court. He was previously charged with manslaughter in the death of Talon Lonethunder in December 2024. The manslaughter charge has been withdrawn.
Maxie, who was also recently charged with violating his release conditions, was remanded into custody. The nature of the conditions breach was not revealed.
The co-accused in Lonethunder's death, Jeremy Whitebear, also had his matter heard June 11 and remains in custody. Whitebear is charged with second-degree murder.
Both men will have their next court appearance July 9 in Carlyle Provincial Court.
A preliminary hearing has not been scheduled for the two. When he was told the hearing would likely take four days, Judge Mitch Miller said it would require a special sitting and he's going to need a relief judge so Miller can preside over the matter. He suggested the parties involved come up with a list of potential dates during a week with a Carlyle trial date, so that the docket date isn't disrupted.
Background: At approximately 2:30 a.m. on Dec. 3, 2024, the Carlyle RCMP received a report of an injured individual at a residence at White Bear. Officers immediately responded and located the 33-year-old Lonethunder deceased.
Charges were announced Dec. 5, 2024. Both men were on the run at that time. Whitebear was arrested two days later at White Bear. Maxie was apprehended Dec. 12 in Regina. They have since had multiple court appearances.
Charges against them have not been proven in court.
