ESTEVAN — The Estevan Fire Rescue Service had a busy week, with fires, collisions and more to handle.

Firefighters were called to a grass fire May 12 south of the city. Crews responded and worked to extinguish the flames. No injuries or damage were reported from the incident.

"The cause of the fire was from a tree on a power line," said Fire Chief Rick Davies. "The crews were held up a little bit, waiting for SaskPower to arrive and kill power on that scene."

Two calls came in May 13. The EFRS was dispatched to a commercial fire alarm in south-central Estevan. Crews responded and investigated. No emergency was occurring and the alarm was believed to be due to a faulty system.

Firefighters were then called to a reported electrical hazard in south-central Estevan. Crews responded and investigated, and found some tree branches on power lines, so crews secured the area until SaskPower could arrive on scene and deal with the issue.

Firefighters dealt with a structure fire at the Willow Park Greens Home Park early on May 14. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Crews responded to a two-vehicle collision in northeast Estevan that same day. The incident was not located; Davies said it was minor enough that both vehicles could be driven from the scene.

The EFRS was called to another two-vehicle collision on May 15. Crews responded and assisted at that scene as well. Davies said no injuries occurred and minor damage was reported.

Then on May 17, the EFRS was called to a commercial fire alarm in northeast Estevan. Crews responded, investigated and confirmed an emergency wasn't occurring. The alarm was due to a cooking-related incident, so they assisted with ventilation and resetting the alarm system.

May 18 included a vehicle versus deer collision north of the city. Crews assisted and Davies said no injuries occurred.

The EFRS had one call May 19 – a commercial fire alarm in north Estevan. An investigation determined an emergency wasn't occurring. It was a cooking-related incident and the EFRS's assistance wasn't required.

Davies expects the precipitation the Estevan area has received since the morning of May 14 has reduced the wildfire risk in the area, and so the EFRS shouldn't have to worry about grass fires for a while. While there have been fire bans further north, nothing was enacted in the Estevan area.
