ESTEVAN — The resurfacing project for Highway 18 west of Estevan has moved to the next phase.

In an email to SaskToday, the Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways says it is investing more than $13.1 million towards improving Highway 18 between Estevan and Outram, along with the Boundary Dam Power Station Access Road.

According to the ministry, on-site project work began in February to install 15 culverts by burrowing them through the side slope under the highway to have less impact on traffic. The culvert installations were completed in May.

The ministry added gravel crushing for the project also began in February and was expected to be completed by mid-July. Grading and paving work are also expected to begin around the middle of this month.

The project is expected to be completed this fall, the ministry said, if weather co-operates.

"The patience and understanding of all motorists is appreciated as this work occurs to improve Saskatchewan’s highway system for the long-term to support our export-based economy," the ministry said.

All drivers are reminded to be cautious and alert in the area, and obey all flag persons and signage.

Motorists are also reminded to check the Highway Hotline for construction updates before travelling.

The government announced the upgrades to Highway 18 west of Estevan in 2024 as part of a two-year project. At the time of the announcement, Estevan-Big Muddy MLA Lori Carr said all of Highway 18 from the Manitoba border to the junction with Highway 6 will have been resurfaced in recent years.
