The Estevan Art Gallery and Museum (EAGM) has kicked off what will be another busy month for its Artist in the Making summer art camps.

The first camp, Diversity in Art, opened on July 4 and will continue until July 7. Sixteen youths were registered for the camp, and could participate in either morning or afternoon sessions.

“This week we’re doing art based on different cultures from around the world,” said Martina Veneziano, who is the EAGM’s educator. “We’re making drums from Africa, dream catchers and batiks from Indonesia.”

The next camp will be two-dimensional and three-dimensional art from July 11 to 14. Then the Art in Advertising Camp will run from July 18 to 21, and Art and Activity will be July 25 to 28.

The 2D and the 3D camp has the most registrants thus far.

“We’re going to be doing a bit of drawing, some sculpting and some mosaics with beans,” said Veneziano.

The Art in Advertising Camp, in which the young people learn about the newspaper industry and create ads that appear in the Estevan Mercury, has traditionally been their most popular camp.

The final camp will feature such activities as pendulum paintings, a paint fight and more.

The summer camp program will wrap up July 28 with an exhibit that features works created by the students this summer. The exhibit starts at 5 p.m. in the arts tent that will be at the EAGM for the Saskatchewan Summer Games.

“They’re going to choose one or two things that they’ve made,” said Veneziano.

She is happy with the number of young people who have registered already, and they are still accepting participants. They have limits for each camp, because if they have too many young people registered, they won’t have enough space for them to complete the projects.
