Leisa Way is very excited about coming to Weyburn to perform “Oh, Canada, We Sing for Thee” musical tribute at the Cugnet Centre on Monday, October 2 at 7:30 p.m.
Weyburn has a special place in her heart, since it is the home of W.O. Mitchell. Leisa spoke fondly of having the opportunity to meet with W.O. Mitchell when she was younger. “He was a sweetheart of a man. I have read every one of his books and have a real love and affection for him. The stories that he told are so important to Canadian history.”
“Oh, Canada, We Sing for Thee” is a patriotic concert that takes the audience on an exciting cross-Canada musical journey. The audience will hear a spectacular collection of hits from the greatest Canadian stars. “It will be a rockin’ party celebrating Canada and a two-hour journey of the greatest music of Canadian history,” said Leisa Way.
It features a sing-along to the best of Canadian artists such as Gordon Lightfoot, Anne Murray, Celine Dion, Michael Buble, Shania Twain, Stompin’ Tom Connors, Buffy Ste. Marie, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell, The Guess Who, Ian and Sylvia Tyson, Don Messer, Bryan Adams, BTO and more.
The show features a wide range of musical styles from each decade starting with the early rock of the 1950s, as well as styles from fiddle tunes to French-Canadian folk, 1970s rock and more.
During this concert, Leisa Way is able to cover the musical range and styles from Shania Twain’s country twang to the songbirds Anne Murray and Rita McNeil. The experienced The Wayward Wind Band joins her on stage.
“It is not just a concert. We tell the stories about how those songs came to be, or about the author that wrote the song, and why they did,” said Leisa. “We also link the songs together with funny stories about being Canadian. This concert is meant to be a fun time, that covers every genre of Canadian history, and celebrating our pride of being Canadian.”
Leisa said that the Wayward Wind Band is an amazing group of musicians. “Each of the band members are fantastic soloists in their own right, and each one gets featured during the concert in their own way. It is always a joy to see them perform. We have a wonderful camaraderie together, everyone is having a blast.”
The band enjoys traveling to new communities, and across Canada, to share their love of Canadian music with new fans. “We are often reminded of how Canadians are great people, and that as Canadians we are the nicest people in the world.”
