The Laureate chapter of Beta Sigma Phi held its annual Founder’s Day on April 30, and used the opportunity to recognize one of its long-time members.

Shirley Andrist was presented with a pin, a certificate and a rose to recognize 60 years of membership in Beta Sigma Phi in Estevan.

Andrist gave a short talk to give members the background of how she came to be a member more than 60 years ago.

Andrist (née Sillers) grew up in Estevan but, after finishing her education, she went to England to teach school. While there, she received word of her mother’s death and decided to return to Estevan for a short while.

At that time, all of her high school friends had moved away and, having a desire to meet new people, she was asked to join Beta Sigma Phi, a social and cultural group for women. At that time, the group held an annual Christmas social.

Andrist, as one of only two single members, was not too anxious to attend the dance but she and the other unattached member decided to go together. However, the other member ended up with a date, and Andrist was then “set up” with a friend of her older brother – Pine Andrist.

The two started dating and were eventually married. The couple made Estevan home, and they raised their four children.

Estevan has been very fortunate to have Andrist and all of the many contributions she has made to the community.
