Not-for-profit organizations, public-sector employers and small businesses with 50 or fewer employees looking to hire full-time workers for summer 2016 can now apply for funding under the Canada Summer Jobs program.
The Canada Summer Jobs creates summer job opportunities and valuable work experience specifically for youth aged 15 to 30 intending to return to their studies in the next school year. The program aims to help employers create summer job opportunities that focus on priorities important to their communities, which could include special events such as sporting or cultural occasions.
In the Souris-Moose Mountain riding, the priorities focus on tourism, agriculture, and oil and gas, but all eligible applicants are encouraged to apply.
“I encourage southeast Saskatchewan not-for-profit organizations, public-sector employers and small businesses to apply for funding so that we can help our students gain the skills and experience they need to be successful, while earning money for the upcoming school year,” said Dr. Robert Kitchen, MP for Souris-Moose Mountain.
It is hoped that a number of employers will come forward with applications which will also complement a number of national priorities.
These priorities include: employers who help welcome and settle Syrian refugees to Canada, as well as Syrian students; Indigenous people, who are among the fastest-growing segments of the Canadian population; small businesses working to become more innovative, competitive, and successful, in recognition of their key contribution to the creation of jobs; and cultural and creative industries creating jobs and to strengthen a rich Canadian identity.
The last priority will support the planning of Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation, to be marked in 2017.
The application period runs opened on Jan. 4, and will run until Feb. 26. Applicants approved for funding will be able to hire students as early as May 2016.
