After a record number of deaths in 2015, the Saskatchewan All-Terrain Vehicle Association (SATVA) is calling on all candidates in the upcoming provincial election to seriously consider ATV safety issues, and none of the major parties have noted ATV issues in their respective election platforms.
“We need the government elected on April 4, to address this major safety issue or people will continue to die or be injured on their ATVs,” said John Meed, general manager of the Saskatchewan All-Terrain Vehicle Association.
In addition to last year’s death total which reached nine, there were 1,019 hospital admissions due to ATV injuries.
This places a major strain on the health care system, not to mention lost time from work and family.
“The government can’t keep ignoring this issue. They need to commit to an action plan that will properly address ATV concerns,” said Meed.
An action plan would include: Funding for safety training and education programs so more people would know how to safely operate an ATV.
Funding to create dedicated ATV trails which would lead to safer experiences for ATV drivers.
ATV registration to ensure proper enforcement and to provide funding for the first two action items.
An overhaul of the ATV Act, which has seen only minor revisions since it was enacted in 1989.
“This is a serious issue and the government elected on April 4, 2016 needs to take action,” said Meed.
SATVA was formed in 2006 to unite ATV clubs and users into a single voice to promote the safe and responsible use of ATVs in Saskatchewan. ATVs include quads, side by sides, UTVs and other off road vehicles.
