MOOSOMIN — If you enjoyed last year’s inaugural Beer Mile fundraiser, the good news is that it’s back!

Iron Prairie Strength Lab and Skout Brewing are teaming up for the second annual Beer Mile on Sept. 6. The premise of the event is to navigate the one-mile course while stopping at four stations every quarter-mile to enjoy either a beer or a carbonated beverage. Participants can walk or run the mile, and can tackle the challenge solo or as part of a team of two or four. Those who took part in last year’s Beer Mile will already be familiar with the route, as Jill Dowling from Iron Prairie Strength Lab explained.

“It will be the same route, stations one and two will still be at Iron Prairie Strength Lab, and then three will be kind of in front of Rocky Mountain, and then the last one will be at Skout,” she said.

Leaving the gym at noon, the route travels along North Front Street, up Park Avenue and back to Iron Prairie Strength Lab, then down Park Avenue to Rocky Mountain Equipment before continuing onward to Skout Brewing.

Last year’s event raised nearly $3,000 for the new Play Fair Daycare building, and this year’s recipient will be the Moosomin Visual Arts Centre.

“Our goal is to help the arts centre pay for a new pottery wheel,” Dowling said. “If we could get about $2,500, somewhere around there, to sponsor that. We’d be happy with anything, but that’s our goal for this year.”

Choosing to support MVAC this year was an easy decision for the organizers.

“They offer really great programs,” Dowling said. “Every year, our plan is to choose something to support, something in the community. So absolutely, they were top of our list this year.”

Open to everyone

Don’t let the moniker ‘Beer Mile’ fool you; this event is not strictly for those of legal drinking age. In fact, the whole family can take part in this uniquely Moosomin fundraiser.

“Families can do it, too, you can take your kids in the wagon, there’s going to be a barbecue at the end this year with Skout,” Dowling said. “You don’t even have to do the run to participate in this event; you can come cheer at the finish line and participate in the barbecue, because all the proceeds for that are going to go towards it as well.”

New this year is a ride back to your vehicle from Skout back to the gym.

“Jeannot Electric is donating their shuttle van, so we’ll actually have a way to get people back from Skout to their vehicles parked at Iron Prairie,” Dowling said.

As a little incentive, there will be some fun prizes for those taking part, aside from bragging rights for finishers. Organizers would also like to secure the first weekend in September for the event, eyeing it as the perfect time to hold such an event.

“We chose it last year based on what kind of events were running then, and on our own schedules as well,” Dowling explained. “People are coming back from holidays, more likely to be around, and back to school. We figured the most people would be around that first weekend after the long weekend.”
