Members of the Carnduff and Area Beef 4-H Club have had a busy start to the year.
On Oct. 2, the club met for its organizational meeting. They have several new members joining them this year, and they were at 22 members as of the start of the year.
They chose their new board members and then they talked about the upcoming activities.
October was a very busy month for members, as they were involved in fowl suppers in Glen Ewen and Carnduff, a bottle drive in Carnduff and a halter breaking demo.
The November meeting saw Marlee Phair from Nutrien come and gave a brief talk about grain. Nutrien’s motto is Growing the World, from the Ground Up.
Nov. 4 was 4-H Appreciation Day and in supporting 4-H and the club, she also supplied snacks and drinks.
The club then went into its meeting. Among the items discussed were: Carnduff will be hosting the district public speaking on Feb. 8, 2020, Redvers hosted the district fall rally on Nov. 15, the RM of Mount Pleasant allowed the club to use its shop to do its recycling last month, and the Carnduff United Church Women made a donation to the club.
There was a demonstration on the importance of good, clean water and how it affects calves in gaining weight. Several members ate a bunch of soda crackers and then offered them different kinds of “dirty” water to wash it down. The point being that when calves realize that they don’t have good water to wash down their hay and grain, they will start to eat less, gain less and even lose weight. Everyone had a fun time watching it.
They also discussed Regina’s Agribition at the end of November. On Nov. 25, several members attended its youth team grooming. Club members also attended the Kirk Stierwalt presentation on the Agribition Family Day.
