As the result of a curfew check on release conditions, a 33-year-old male was arrested without incident for breaching the release conditions on Thursday. He is now facing additional charges of breach of undertaking, possession of marijuana and possession of LSD.
The Weyburn Police Service is experiencing more and more instances where young people are being found driving and in possession of marijuana.
To be crystal clear on this, nowhere in Canada will youth under 18 or 19 years of age be permitted to possess marijuana in public after July 1st, 2018. Anywhere leading up to July 1, it is still a criminal offence for anyone to possess marijuana (unless by a medical prescription). Nothing in the law has changed yet, and nothing in the law will allow youth to possess marijuana in public after July 2018.
City police received a report that a vehicle had driven past a school bus displaying flashing lights and ‘stop’ arm Thursday. Police wish to remind drivers that it is the law to stop from either direction when a school bus has the ‘stop’ arm activated and displayed. When the flashing lights are activated that should be a warning to the drivers that the bus is about to stop and they are not to pass until the lights and stop arm are switched off. If a proper licence plate can be provided to the police, the registered owner of the vehicle can be held legally responsible for the actions of that vehicle and would receive the ticket.
City police have had two formal complaints this week regarding school-age teens sharing sexually explicit photographs of same-age peers. What typically happens is that someone takes a photo of their private parts then shares it with a boyfriend or girlfriend. However, what police have seen happening lately is that this image is then being shared with the original recipient’s friends without the sender’s permission or knowledge.
This is an extremely serious matter and can lead to criminal charges with mandatory jail sentences. What may have seemed ‘fun’ is actually a criminal offence of distributing child pornography. If convicted the sender (or all people who subsequently sent the image) face mandatory jail time.
The Weyburn Police Service have once again had a number of calls this week regarding Internet and phone scams. They range from the ‘Grandparent Scam’ where someone from the police calls a family member asking for bail money for someone to the CRA scams to letters from Publisher’s Clearing House. As always, police ask that you don’t give out personal information over the phone or Internet until verifying who you are dealing with.
As reported earlier, the Weyburn police have arrested and now charged a 29-year-old male on Nov. 22 in relation to a Nov. 17 incident where the accused evaded the police while they were attempting to conduct a traffic stop. This individual was also arrested on outstanding warrants from the Saskatoon Police Service and the Biggar detachment of the RCMP.
Weyburn police assisted Weyburn EMS in dealing with a potential drug overdose on Wednesday. The person was transported to the Weyburn General Hospital.
