A number of very significant events will be taking place in the next two weeks at the Weyburn Comprehensive School. The first of these is the annual Remembrance Day ceremony that will be held on today, Nov. 9 at 2:30 p.m. in the Cugnet Centre.
This solemn and very respectful event is organized by the SRC and is presented to honour all those that have fallen in the pursuit of peace over the many conflicts that Canada has been involved in, and also to recognize the service of the men and women in Canada’s armed forces in the past, present and future.
A presentation will be held by SUTIL (Saskatchewan University and Technical Institute Liaison) tonight, Nov. 9, starting at 7 p.m. in the Cugnet Centre. Around 20 post-secondary universities, technical institutes and various other post-secondary opportunities will have displays, starting with a small presentation at 7, and the session will run from 7 to 8:30 p.m. This is open to the public as well as interested students from Weyburn and the surrounding area.
All of the school’s volleyball teams, with the exception of the senior teams, will be competing in Southeast District playoffs at various locations around the district, including WCS, on Thursday, Nov. 10.
The first matches in the Southern 5A Girls’ Regional SHSAA Volleyball playoffs will be held on Friday at 6:30 p.m. Three teams will advance from this event to provincials the next weekend. This two-pool event will start Friday evening and continue all day Saturday with teams from Moose Jaw Central, Moose Jaw Peacock, Balgonie Greenall, Estevan Comprehensive, Yorkton Regional, Swift Current Comprehensive and the host Weyburn Comprehensive. The boys will be in Estevan for their playoff. As these are SHSAA playoffs there will be an admission charge.
When volleyball playoffs are over basketball and wrestling will start. There seems to be a shortage of curlers and it is not known whether WCS will have curling teams this year.
The junior version of ”Seussical” will hit the stage in the Cugnet Centre next Wednesday and Thursday, Nov. 16 and 17. This shortened version of the Broadway hit will feature the up-and-coming stars of the WCS music and drama departments from Grades 7-9. The shows get underway at 7 p.m. and tickets ($15 for adults) can be purchased ahead of time at the school or at the door.
The Cugnet Centre will explode with “The Sounds of the 80’s” on Sunday, Nov. 20, at 6:30 p.m. This event, organized by the STARS Show Choir, will feature all the school choirs along with soloists, duets, rock bands and of course the STARS choir. The entertainment will last all evening long with desserts and beverages included in the admission price, which is $15 for adults, $10 for students and children aged five and under are $5. Tickets are available at the door. Plan to come, sit back, enjoy some desserts and relax to the fabulous tunes of the 80’s.
Also a reminder that the annual WCS Fowl supper will be held on Thursday, Dec. 1, starting at 5:30 p.m. The later start is necessary so that all pieces can be put into place prior to the beginning of what is expected to be a big supper. With four serving lines and lots of seating it is expected that the school will be able to serve a large number of diners. Entertainment will also be provided for the whole time. The price is $12 with children under five free. Tickets can only be purchased at the door.
