The cities of Weyburn and Estevan will return to competing for the Golden Garbage Can, with official judging to take place on Monday, June 21, in Weyburn and Tuesday, June 22, in Estevan. Provincial Environment minister Nancy Heppner will be this years celebrity judge of the competition.To help Weyburn prepare for the competition, there will be a residential and Chamber judging of business on Monday, June 7. Judges selected by the Weyburn clean-up campaign will tour the five different zones of Weyburn to determine which one is the most improved since last year.The zones are as follows: area 1 encompasses South Hill and the west side of the city; area 2 is the downtown section of town, including the hospital, public library and St. Dominic School; area 3 goes north of First Avenue, and the area between King Street and 18th Street; area 4 takes in the vicinity of St. Michael and Haig schools; and area 5 is the east side of the city.The Weyburn Minor Ball will be helping to clean parks and public areas before the residential judging. In addition, residents are invited to take advantage of the city-run Household Hazardous Waste Day at the Weyburn Fire Hall on Saturday, May 29, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.Landfill drop-off coupons have also been distributed to residents, as they had been printed in the Booster during the first week of May. To date, there have already been roughly 70 coupons used by residents, and the engineering department expects this number to rise with the arrival of spring weather.This is the 54th year of competition for the Clean Up Campaign. It was started in 1956 by the health inspectors of Weyburn and Estevan. There has been 47 years of competition between Weyburn and Estevan (1956 to 2003), six years of residential competition in Weyburn, and 16 years of Chamber of Commerce business-sector competition.
