The Estevan Fire Rescue Service (EFRS) members responded to a power pole fire during the weekend.

On Saturday at about 11:30 p.m., Estevan firefighters responded to a reported power pole fire that was occurring in the central area of the city. Crews barricaded the area until SaskPower arrival to prevent anybody from entering the hazard zone. SaskPower specialists de-energized the power pole and the area, knocking out electricity to part of the city, so that way firefighters could move in and suppress the fire.

"The fire was extinguished without incidents and nobody was hurt as a result of the fire," said Estevan Fire Chief Dale Feser.

He praised the quick thinking of people who were passing by and called the fire in, which allowed them to minimize the impact.

SaskPower crews remained on scene to repair the power pole and restore power to the area.  Feser said that part of the pole structure had to be replaced, and power was out for a little while.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation by SaskPower. There was no evidence of anything coming in contact with the power pole. And even though there were some lightning and thunder in the area around that time, there were no reports of any lightning strikes.
