An Estevan man received a 21-month jail sentence after Estevan Police Service found approximately 30 g of cocaine in his home on April 8.
He also received a three-month jail sentence for breaching an existing 12-month probation order, which he received on March 31 in relation to various assault charges. The time will be served concurrently with his 21 months.
Cyrus Ackrill, 20, appeared in Estevan Provincial Court for sentencing on April 13, where presiding Judge Lane Weigers accepted a joint submission agreed to by the Crown and defence.
EPS executed a search warrant on his residence and found approximately $2,000 worth of cocaine, and according to the provincial Crown, could have been valued at a much greater price if it were cut or sold by the gram.
Just over $100 in cash was also found at the accused’s residence.
After being questioned several times by police after the arrest, Ackrill finally admitted to being involved with the trafficking of the drugs, and pleaded guilty to the charges in court.
The Crown noted Ackrill initially stated that the drugs were for ‘personal use,’ but quickly changed his statement.
The defence said Ackrill has had addiction issues and has had difficulty staying out of trouble.
Judge Weigers made mention of the fact that Ackrill’s record was becoming more serious and that further trouble would result in a much harsher penalty than the one given to him now.
Ackrill was also sentenced to a 10-year firearms prohibition and a $400 victim fine surcharge.
In other proceedings, Andrew Ferrer, 40, was remanded in custody after a brief bail hearing that resulted in the green lighting of his release. However, because the $5,000 cash bail wasn’t available at the time, his case was adjourned to April 16 in Estevan.
The Crown said Ferrer’s mother would be providing the cash deposit but required more time.
Ferrer was arrested on April 2 at the North Portal international border crossing and has been accused of attempting to smuggle in child pornography.
He was charged with possession of child pornography and importation of child pornography. A number of computer storage devices were seized by members of the Saskatchewan Internet Child Exploitation Unit (ICE) for further investigation.
