The Estevan chapter of Quota International is looking forward to a visit from a significant guest, and ambassador for the organization as a whole. Quota International board vice-president Emilie Simon is on her way to Estevan for an evening of friendship, fun and great food.

Simon, who has been involved with Quota for 22 years, is the first Filipino to be on the organization’s international board.  Quota empowers women, children, the deaf, hard-of-hearing and speech-impaired individuals in communities worldwide.

“This is big for Estevan, and for us, for someone to come this far and meet our community, and see what we do,” said Valerie Hall, director for Quota Canada Region 1. “We’re doing this to welcome her. You don’t usually get an international board member to the club.”

She will be stopping in Estevan for two days to tour the city and learn about the local Quota charter’s activities. Hall said the tour is a chance for Quota to reach out to the local Filipino community.

“This is an opportunity to get to know her, and for her to learn what Quota has to offer in the community. I have some junior Quota students from Hillcrest School speaking about their projects, and what they did to help the hospital and the Salvation Army,” said Hall. “We’re going to express what we do locally, and she’ll talk about what she does in her community.”

“I am excited, and looking forward to my first visit to the Quotarians in Estevan,” said Simon, in an email correspondence with the Mercury. “I’m very overwhelmed with the outstanding preparations being undertaken by Valerie Hall.”

Simon has an extensive history of work with Quota. Her participation has had her working in numerous Quota districts in the Philippines, her titles ranging from chairperson and treasurer, to international representative.

Simon has chaired several projects in her time with Quota in the Philippines, including the construction of a multi-purpose hall for the multi-disabled in Morong, Rizal, and the upgrading of supplies and goods for livelihood courses at the Philippine School for the Deaf and Blind, in Pasay City.

The event will take place at the St. Paul’s United Church Christian Education Centre on July 18, at 5 p.m. Proceeds will also support Quota projects in Metropolitan Cebu, in the Philippines.

Tickets can be purchased at the Estevan Century 21 Border Real Estate office. For more information, or to purchase tickets, contact Valerie Hall at 306-421-9424.
