Members of the Weyburn Police Service and Fire Department were recognized for exemplary service at city council on Monday evening, as the respective chiefs awarded the commendations.
For the police, Chief Marlo Pritchard and deputy chief Rod Stafford recognized the work of Const. Melinda Mintenko for her work in developing the “Ride’s On Us” program, which has led to a significant decline in charges laid for impaired driving in Weyburn.
A commendation was also presented to Const. Jeff Bartsch, for his efforts in raising the awareness of mental health issues by competing in marathon races in full uniform.
He will be taking part in the “Run to Remember” marathon in April in California, representing one of three Canadian police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
Fire Chief Simon Almond recognized three fire fighters for their years of exemplary service, including Wayne Satre for serving over 40 years, platoon leader Mike Kaip and fire fighter Wade Oberg, both of whom began with the Fire Department in 1995. The Exemplary Services medal honours members of a fire service who have completed 20 years of service, 10 years of which were in the performance of duties involving potential risks.
The Weyburn Fire Department has a combined total of 384 years of experience with the current roster of fire fighters.
