SMPIA organizers said the decision to postpone was made due to the risks for unvaccinated youth, as the Delta variant continues to cause concern.

REGINA — In an effort to protect the health and safety of the community, the final event scheduled for the Eye on Saskatchewan Screen Week & Expo on Saturday has been cancelled, said organizers.

Family Day, set to take place on Aug. 28 from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m., has now been postponed indefinitely.

The Saskatchewan Media Production Industry Association (SMPIA) made the announcement Friday, citing concerns over the rising number of COVID-19 cases reported in the past week.

Since the event, which was to feature live workshops and other entertainment at Sound Stage One in Regina, was aimed towards children and families, the SMPIA felt it was best to protect those children who are not able to be vaccinated.

“We believe it would make the experience more enjoyable for the whole family a few months from now, when the Delta variant has become more manageable for family-oriented events like this,” said SMPIA executive director Ken Alecxe.

Online events for Eye on Saskatchewan will continue as planned, and the SMPIA plans to announce a new date for a Family Day event in the future.
