The burning hot sun with hardly any clouds is shining over Estevan on Tuesday.

Tuesday afternoon, Environment Canada has issued a heat warning for the Estevan area and the entire southern Saskatchewan region. The extreme heat warning is expected to remain in affect for the next 13 hours.

“Temperatures reaching 35 degrees Celsius combined with overnight lows near 16 degrees Celsius are expected for the next two days,” says the information distributed by Environment Canada.

“An upper ridge of high pressure over Saskatchewan is bringing very hot conditions to all areas. After a relatively cool start to the day, temperatures this afternoon will peak in the mid thirties under sunny skies and light winds.

“Temperatures tonight will be a few degrees warmer than last night, offering less relief from the heat, followed by another hot day on Wednesday. It will continue hot on Thursday in regions south of the Yellowhead, however further north temperatures will moderate slightly.”

Environment Canad also reminded that while extreme heat affects everyone,  the risks are greater for young children, pregnant women, older adults, people with chronic illnesses and people working or exercising outdoors.

People are  asked to watch for the effects of heat illness, which include swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the worsening of some health conditions.

“Heat warnings are issued when very high temperature or humidity conditions are expected to pose an elevated risk of heat illnesses, such as heat stroke or heat exhaustion.

“Please call HealthLine 811 for advice on health risks, symptoms and precautions associated with heat.

“Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to [email protected] or tweet reports using #SKStorm.”
