Heather Gordon posed with her blue elephant during the Canadian Mental Health Association's presentation, "Mental Health in the Workplace", for which Gordon was the special speaker. Elephant in the Room is a national anti-stigma campaign designed to eliminate the stigma associated with mental illness. Displaying a blue elephant in a space signifies that it is a safe place to talk about mental illness without fear of being looked upon differently or stigmatized. More than 15,000 elephants have been distributed to date in Canada.

Weyburn's Heather Gordon spoke about battling depression in the workplace during the Canadian Mental Health Association's Mayor's Luncheon, which was held on May 8 at McKenna Hall. She delivered the full version of her presentation on May 10 at the CMHA's headquarters, entitled "Mental Health in the Workplace."

On May 27, the first annual Defeat Depression event is being held across Canada. For the first time, a national event is being held to bring attention to mental health and mental illness. More than one million Canadians suffer with mood disorders. Gordon has been part of a national steering committee formed by the Mood Disorders Society of Canada to launch a national campaign and annual event to raise awareness about depression and other mood disorders.

While various activities are taking place across Canada for the Defeat Depression Campaign on May 27, Gordon will be walking the 15 kilometre stretch from McTaggart to Weyburn.

"I want to help reduce the stigma often associated with a mental illness," said Gordon. "I also hope generate interest in a formal organizing committee for a 2013 event!"

Gordon began Weyburn's event as a solo walk, but encourages more people to join her in raising pledges to assist local non-profit mental health organizations to deliver services and support.
