The Water Security Agency is advising the public of the potential for ice jams during spring runoff. Ice thicknesses in many areas in the province are greater than usual because of the below normal temperatures this winter.
An ice jam can create a temporary ice dam, backing up water that can cause local flooding. Also when this water is released it may create a surge causing sudden flooding downstream. The general public should be aware of this additional hazard and extremely cautious around rivers during spring runoff.
The Water Security Agency was created to lead implementation of the 25 year Saskatchewan Water Security Plan. It will improve water management capacity and service to individuals, businesses and communities across Saskatchewan.
This new agency brings together all the major responsibilities related to water quality and quantity.
