Jane’s Walk Weyburn will be taking the show on the road for its fourth year in a row, but this year’s version will be a self-guided walking tour.
City organizer Lindsay Manko-Bauche has released a digital version of a past tour. “Let’s get walking and take in the sights and sounds that Signal Hill has to offer,” she said.
“If you are looking for a great way to get outside these days, why not learn a thing or two about Weyburn’s rich local history by taking part in a self-guided Jane’s Walk tour of Signal Hill,” said Manko-Bauche.
Typically, Jane’s Walk is an annual festival of free, in person, citizen-led walking conversations that encourage people to share stories about their neighbourhoods, discover unseen aspects of their communities, and use walking as a way to connect with their neighbours. Walks take place in hundreds of cities around the world, and Weyburn is one of those locations.
“This year looks a little different than our past years, but the essence of Jane’s Walk still rings true. I have taken my speaking notes from our 2018 Signal Hill tour and translated them into a digital document so that anybody with a smart phone or printer can access the tour. It’s a great way to keep physically distant, but still get out an experience what Weyburn has to offer,” said Manko-Bauche, city organizer.
“This is a labour of interest and love; love of my history and love of my community. I'm by no means an historian, but in the spirit of Jane Jacobs, I’ve attempted this tiny glimpse into Weyburn’s history to hopefully get people out, get people talking, and get people walking around,” she added. “If you have anything to add or change on the tour, please message me! This is an evolving document and is intended to be enriched by people's personal memories and experiences.”
She noted that those that have attended the walks before can attest to the fact that some of the best information has come from people reminiscing about their own experiences and memories of Weyburn.
In the current health climate with restrictions imposed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this is an easy activity to participate in while adhering to social distancing protocols.
“We want people to be safe, and this is a nice way to focus on some positive news for a change. Considering how many activities have had to be cancelled or pulled back, we just wanted to remind individuals that there are still great things to do in your own back yard,” said Manko- Bauche.
