The ringing of bells along with the red kettle for the Salvation Army will be a common sight in stores around Weyburn from Thursday, Nov. 30 until Saturday, Dec. 23.
The kickoff for the campaign was held at City Hall on Monday, with the first donation coming from Norm and Shirley Mondor in the amount of $20,000.
Helen Orsted is the organizer of the Weyburn kettle campaign, and she is asking that anyone interested in volunteering for two-hour time slots give her a call.
The first kettle campaign began in 1906, with the goal of raising funds for the Salvation Army to meet the needs of people in the community. Today the campaign will be run in over 2,000 communities across Canada.
All of the money raised in Weyburn in this campaign will stay in Weyburn to meet local needs, said Orsted, with the Salvation Army aiming to raise $30,000 this year.
There will be four locations in Weyburn this year, including the Co-op food store, Wal-Mart, the Wholesale Club, and the Liquor Board store in the mall.
The shifts for the kettle have been divided into two-hour time slots, and Orsted noted she’ll have about 300 time slots to fill. She suggested a group or family could take a full day, as some families have done in recent years, or by volunteers from churches or service organizations, or from the community at large.
