The Weyburn Fire Department hosted a training day for the surrounding communities on February 21. Firefighters from Estevan, Rouleau, Sedley, Yellow Grass and Weyburn spent a full day at the local fire hall, with classroom work in the morning and a hands-on training tactical mission in the afternoon.
The afternoon training session was a mock car crash scene, which had several cars and one semi in a pile- up. The firefighters were split into groups, each working on an individual vehicle, with all groups sharing the ultimate goal of safely and effectively gaining control of the accident scene.
The vehicles are donated locally and allow the firefighters to get hands-on experience using rescue equipment, as well as experience working together as a team.
Temperatures were very frigid on Saturday and served as a reminder that emergency workers not only brave dangerous situations, but extreme elements as well.
