A former long-time teacher and national representative for Quota International, Judy Buzowetsky, died on Saturday at the age of 74 years at a hospital in North Battleford after a brief battle with cancer.
She came to Weyburn 50 years ago to teach Home Economics at the newly-opened Weyburn Junior High, and for 48 years was an active member of Quota International of Weyburn.
With Quota, she was president of the Weyburn club, then served as district governor before representing Canada to Quota’s international board from 2000 to 2002, said longtime friend and fellow Quotarian Isabelle Butters.
“There was a convention every year for the international board, plus a couple of board meetings throughout the year, so she did a lot of travelling,” said Butters, noting Judy was also involved in Grace United Church, the University Women Club, the Royal Purple and the Weyburn Multicultural Council.
In addition, she also served on the University of Saskatchewan Senate.
“Her hands were always busy. She did hardanger, crocheting and knitting and was constantly doing those projects. She was very generous at donating them. She was so handy with her hands, she didn’t waste a minute,” said Butters.
Even though Judy had moved up to Blaine Lake, she came to Weyburn regularly to attend Quota, Royal Purple and Grace United meetings, as well as the Multicultural Council and University Women until they folded.
As a former teacher, she was involved also with the Weyburn chapter and the provincial executive of the Superannuated Teachers of Saskatchewan group.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 27 at First United Church in North Battleford.
