Low-income homeowners received a free tune-up of their furnaces in Weyburn, through SaskEnergy’s Tune-Up Assistance Program, offered through the Crown’s network of plumbing and heating contractors.
The program provides a hands-on examination of the home heating system to make sure it is ready for the onset of winter weather.
The program is offered to qualified homeowners at no charge, and includes the installation of a multi-gas detector that detects both natural gas and carbon monoxide as an added safety measure. Homeowners with a combined annual income of no more than $52,000 qualified, while renters were not eligible.
One of the Weyburn recipients was Fred Sandeski, who said he was grateful for the furnace tune-up, which also included a free replacement of his furnace filter.
“It provides me with a more secure situation. I know my vents are done, and I know the furnace is in good condition,” said Sandeski, adding the heat exchanger was also inspected and is in good shape for the coming winter.
He noted that he and his wife are both on CPP pensions, so any help of this kind is very much appreciated. “This saves me about $200. It doesn’t sound like much, but it helps out a lot,” he said.
The program serves as a reminder to homeowners about the importance of furnace maintenance and cleaning or replacing furnace filters every one to two months. Dirty filters will reduce airflow and force the furnace to run longer, possibly leading to costly repairs, poor indoor air quality, or no service when it’s needed most.
“Annual maintenance of your home heating system is cost-effective compared to purchasing a new furnace or boiler. Regular maintenance can help ensure your system is operating safely and at peak efficiency, improving overall home comfort and reduce the risk of emergency repairs,” said Leslie Gosselin, manager of advertising and community relations for SaskEnergy.
Participating SaskEnergy network members for this program in Weyburn include Climatek Plumbing and Heating Corp., Quality Plumbing and Heating and Vortex Plumbing and Heating.
