One Weyburn family will soon be breaking ground on their way to home ownership.
Angie Dunn and her two children Stuey and Teagan are the first family to be helped by Habitat for Humanity Weyburn.
"Thank you so much, this means everything to us," Dunn said through tears as she accepted flowers at the official announcement on March 14.
Dunn was selected from numerous applications submitted to Habitat for Humanity by a selection committee. Now the work begins on making her dream of being a home owner, reality.
Homeownership is about more than just building equity, as it can instill a family with a renewed sense of confidence and pride.
"This is so overwhelming, I can't wait to tell everyone," Dunn said adding she had found out a few weeks prior and had to keep it a secret until the announcement date.
"Mama was so happy," Stuey said taking his mother's hand.
Stuey is in Grade 1 at Souris School. He says he wants his room to be yellow and black stripes. "I want it to look like space. I'm really, really excited."
Nine-year-old Teagan isn't quite as quick to decide on what she would like her bedroom colours to be. "I'm really excited. Maybe green and blue, but I'm not sure," said the Grade 4 student.
Habitat for Humanity helps families in need make home ownership affordable, said chair Winston Bailey.
"This is not a gift. This is us making this affordable. She is earning this home," said Bailey.
Every family deserves a safe, decent and affordable place to call home. Habitat for Humanity's goal is to make that dream a reality.
Dunn and her children are putting in volunteer hours, which is a requirement for this project. She said her children have opted to help out at the Humane Society as they are too young to be on the construction site.
Habitat for Humanity has partnered with John Hulbert Construction on this project.
"There has to be a journeyman on site, and John has committed to helping with that," said Bailey.
Their new home will be located on Victoria Street and the existing house will be torn down by Hulbert Construction, making way for a new home for the Dunn family.
"I am so grateful for this opportunity. I'm in awe that they chose us," said Dunn.
