Midale captain retires from Army Cadets corps

Midale (cpd) - The Estevan (Elks) PPCLI Army Cadets paid tribute to outgoing officer, Midale resident Captain Ken Turner on Oct. 2. They paid tribute to Capt. Turner with a special "Depart with Dignity" ceremony. Turner, who has reached the age of 65, is now retired from active military reserve duty as well as an officer in the cadet movement, but will continue with the program as a civilian instructor when required.

The transfer station hours of operation are Fridays from 4 to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. Please come during these hours if you need to utilize the dump. If you are caught dumping when the transfer station is not open a fine may be levied.

Midale's civic election is being held today, Oct. 24, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Midale 39er's Hall on Main Street. The candidates running are: Kiley Craig, Dorothy (Dot) Fonstad, Armond Hauglum, Michael Lee, Eric Kesslering, Tim Stephens, Leonard Thompson and Ryan Thompson. Results will be posted here next week. The mayor, Al Hauglum, was re-appointed by acclamation.

Coming soon to a street near you is the "Horror High Haunted House". On Saturday, Oct. 27 from 7:15 p.m. to 11 p.m. you may visit 403 'Eisenhowler' Street to receive the fright of your life. This annual haunted house is not recommended for little kids, but is left up to the parents' discretion. Chris and Jamie Dewtie and friends do a fantastic job every year scaring people. Donations are greatly appreciated. All money raised will go to the New Pool Fund.

Andie Littlejohn will be hosting a trade show on Saturday, Nov. 3 at the Midale Civic Centre from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The Midale Lions Club is having a Halloween Bingo on Oct. 28 at 2 p.m. at the Seniors Centre. Come play bingo in your Halloween costume and a prize will be given to the best costume. The Midale Lions Club are putting on their first Santa Parade on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 11 a.m. It will start at the school and end at the rink. They will be serving hot chocolate and hot dogs and a free public skate from 1-3 p.m. The Lions will also be holding a bingo from 1-3 p.m. at the rink. Please consider putting in a float or any Christmas items to make the first Santa Parade a success. Please have entries in by Nov. 10 to Marilyn Gust.

The Mustangs schedule has been posted on the Big Six website. They will play an exhibition game at home again Oxbow on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 8 p.m. Their home opener is set for Friday, Nov. 9 at 8 p.m. against Bienfait. The Mini Mustangs initiation team began practicing on Oct. 17. They will host a home tournament on Saturday, Dec. 1. The Midale Petroleum Storm novice team also began practicing on Oct. 17. They are going to try and host a home tournament on Saturday, Dec. 8.

Ken Kot from the Weyburn Wrestling Club will be coming to the school on Oct. 31. He will be here for the day working with all the students on the basics of wrestling.

The Senior Girls' home volleyball tournament will be held this weekend. Come out and cheer on the team.

The Grade 5/6 classroom is looking for crib boards and pegs. If anybody has any they would like to get rid of or donate, please talk to Miss Adams.

The Grade 3/4 class held an Education Week potluck and learning fair and it was a delicious success. They were very happy to have their parents and a few special guests attend.

Rider Pride Day was held at the school on Oct. 19 and many of the students and staff participated.
Adult volleyball will be held at the school on Tuesday nights from 7-9 p.m. All adults are welcome to come out. The cost is $2 per evening to play.

For those students needing retakes, they will be on Nov. 1. If you were absent for pictures the first time, please stop by the office to pick up a pose request flyer.

Tori Scharnatta travelled to Echo Valley Provincial Park for cross-country provincials on Oct. 13. She placed an impressive 38th out of 73 runners.

Midale and area's annual Fowl Supper was held on Oct. 14 this year and 470 people attended. The Midale and Area Recreation Board members are thankful for all the volunteers preparing all the food and donating desserts for the fowl supper.

This year the Grade 8 PAA class is going to be setting up an indoor greenhouse in the foyer of Midale Central School. They plan to grow a variety of vegetables and herbs in the greenhouse. The Grade 8 class is excited to get started on this project, but they need some help with the supplies for making the greenhouse. They need metal halide lights (or any lights that are used for plant growth), medium to large size pots (no larger than a foot in diameter), stakes for the plants, old newspapers and potting soil. If anyone has these or other supplies that they can donate until the end of the semester, please call Mr.Wagner at the school. The Grade 8 class would like to thank you in advance for any supplies or help that residents can donate to the indoor greenhouse.

Former Midale resident and mayor Verna Douglas passed away peacefully at the age of 86 on Oct. 6 in Moose Jaw. Verna was postmaster in Midale from 1979 until 1995 when she moved back to Moose Jaw. Verna also held the position of town mayor of Midale for three years.

She was an active member fo the Royal Canadian Legion Auxiliary for 40 years. She was predeceased by her husband and three of her children. She will be missed by her children Ralph (Carol), Kevin, Louise (Peter), foster- daughter Jackie, daughter-in-law Carole and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Her funeral was held on Oct. 11 in Moose Jaw.

Carl Hauglum's wife Margaret is showing her art work in Weyburn at the Weyburn Credit Union's Art Gallery. Margaret's show is called "Good Old Days" with both oil and watercolor paintings being displayed. The "Good Old Days" is a series of eleven paintings of farms from the past. There are some harvest scenes as well as some farms and animals as well. The show will run throughout October.

Midale and Area Recreation Board will be hosting their annual Christmas Craft, Trade and Bake Sale on Saturday, Dec. 1 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tables will be $20 each and call Catrina to book your table. Also this day the Midale Mini-Mustangs are hosting a tournament.
