Weyburn taxpayers will not be dreading a tax increase, thanks to a unanimous vote at a City Council meeting on May 28. Council approved a zero per cent change in millrates for the coming year. Mayor Button said it is important for Weyburn taxpayers to share in and enjoy the benefits of the city's growth.
"Thanks to the expansion of our tax base and Municipal Operating Grant funding from the Province, we are actually able to put away substantial savings while maintaining a zero tax increase," said Mayor Button. "That's a pretty impressive financial accomplishment. City residents deserve to see the benefits of our city's success."
Municipal election day is scheduled for October 24. Council decided against the use of mail-in ballots. For the first time, voters will be required to bring identification to the polling station in order to vote. More information will be available on the City website, weyburn.ca.
A SaskTel tower will be going up at 1711 East Avenue. City Council approved building permits for a huge 70 foot tower to be operated by the provincial telecommunications company, which will fill a similar function as a radio relay point for SaskTel communications signals.
Due to the closure of the Regina Livestock Exchange, the Weyburn Livestock Exchange is anticipating a spike in business and is looking to expand. City Council approved a motion to enter into a 10 year lease agreement with Weyburn Livestock Exchange for the purchase of pens and fencing expansion. The agreement was made on the condition that the WLE provide an environmental impact study to the satisfaction of the City. This will allow WLE time to test the market and plan for relocation.
