The Saskatchewan History and Folklore Society has launched a family-friendly opportunity for people to get out and connect with their local history this month.
Their Historic Marker Program has been supporting communities to erect historic plaques since the 1980s. Over the years, the SHFS has lost touch with some of their 154 Historic Markers.
They have created the Mystery Markers Contest to encourage people to explore their local communities for these markers and to submit photos of them. The goal is to complete an interactive map that will enable Saskatchewan citizens and traveling visitors to engage with local history and folklore.
“Our goal is to reconnect Saskatchewan citizens with the history and folklore that surrounds them in both rural and urban Saskatchewan,” said Keith Carlson, president for the Saskatchewan History and Folklore Society. “It’s a great way to get out, enjoy some sunshine and learn a bit of local history.”
If applicants are successful in emailing pictures, they will receive corresponding entries into the grand prize draw that includes chances to win Roughrider tickets, Folkfest Passports, and SHFS memberships.
The Mystery Markers Contest began June 28 and will run until August 2.
For more information regarding Mystery Markers, interested residents can check out the SHFS website www.shfs.ca. They are also on Facebook and Twitter!
The Saskatchewan History and Folklore Society is a non-profit organization that has been helping the people of Saskatchewan to recognize, share, celebrate, and document their living history and folklore since 1957. SHFS is supported by the Saskatchewan Lotteries Trust System through SaskCulture.
