Nominations are being sought for the biennial Walk of Fame awards, which recognizes individuals who have made significant contribution to the nation or global community.
Walk of Fame nominations can be made by anyone and must be submitted to the City Clerk by Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2014, for the induction planned for 2015.
Nominees must have lived in the City of Weyburn or surrounding area for a minimum of five years at any point during the individual’s lifetime, and consider the city an important part of their life experience. Nominees must have made significant contributions to the national or global landscape in athletics, arts and entertainment, academics, humanitarianism, medicine, science and technology, business and industry, or have made some other outstanding contribution to the community.
Inductees are recognized with the installation of a permanent plaque at a public ceremony. A maximum of two inductees will be honoured in 2015.
Since 2008, there have been ten individuals awarded this prestigious honor. The inaugural inductees were: T.C. (Tommy) Douglas, W.O. Mitchell and David “Tiger” Williams.
The following year, in 2009, Irene Salemka-McGillivray and Neil McKinnon were inducted. Following that award ceremony, the Walk of Fame honours were presented on a bi-annual basis.
In 2011, Harold MacKay and the late Tom Laing were inducted into the business and industry category. In 2013, during the centennial celebrations for the City of Weyburn, the Walk of Fame inductees were Isabelle Butters, Dr. Noel Hall and Arthur Mainil.
The inductees for 2015 will be unveiled at the next instalment, slated for June 20, 2015, in conjunction with the annual Weyburn Car Club Show and Shine.
