Weyburn police responded to a report of a vehicle and bicycle collision on 18th Street at First Avenue at about 2:55 p.m. on Aug. 8. The 14-year-old youth riding the bicycle was transported to the Weyburn General Hospital with what appeared to be minor injuries. Through the investigation it appears that the youth was riding his bicycle south on 18th Street when he failed to stop at the stop sign at First Avenue NE. A vehicle was entering Weyburn from the east on First Avenue and was unable to stop in time to avoid the collision.
This incident ended on a much more positive note than it might have. Parents especially are urged to discuss with their children that when riding a bicycle the rules of the road apply equally to them as to a vehicle. They must stop at stop signs, yield, signal, ride in the proper lane of travel, etc. Although no charges were laid in this case, the youth could have been charged with failing to stop at the stop sign.
