Report from the Weyburn Police Service for the week of July 21 to July 28:
During the reporting period, police dealt with 119 calls for service, including more thefts from motor vehicles. Police remind residents that these are crimes of opportunity. If the vehicle is locked the people will pass it by and look for an unlocked vehicle. Protecting your property is that simple!
*There have also been a number of incidents of graffiti. Anyone with information on this should contact the police. Graffitti, or tagging, as it is commonly called, is indicative of other underlying issues that need to be identified and handled. Police also urge anyone who has been 'tagged' to immediately clean it up after calling the police. Graffiti is, in a lot of ways, a 'look at me' offence, so the quicker it can be cleaned up the less opportunity the culprit has to have their work visible and the less likely they are to repeat or continue as all their hard work is for nothing.
*On July 28, an Allis-Chalmers riding lawn mower was stolen from an apartment complex on Fifth Avenue north. The mower is off-white in colour and is about 20 years old.
*On July 27, police received a report of a vehicle crashing into the fence at the Don Mitchell pool. The investigation revealed that a vehicle had struck the fence and fled the scene. The vehicle was subsequently located and a 15-year-old female has been charged with driving without a license.
*On July 23, police assisted a 37-year-old male in removing a 29-year-old intoxicated female, who was causing a disturbance, from their residence. The female was arrested and released from cells once sober.
*Police conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle with no tail lights. The 18-year-old male driver was found to be intoxicated. He was arrested and charged under the Criminal Code for impaired driving, for being over .08, and driving while suspended. The male also had outstanding warrants for incidents occurring in Moose Jaw. The male's vehicle was impounded and he was lodged in cells until he sobered.
*A 38-year-old male resident reported that an unknown driver of a dark colored vehicle ran over his dog and continued driving away. Anyone with information about this incident is encouraged to contact the Weyburn Police Service at 306-848-3250.
*On July 22, police received 13 complaints of vehicles that were entered that were located at residences in the northeast section of Weyburn. Items commonly missing to most owners are wallets, change, cash and cigarettes. Larger items reported missing are a lap top computer and a PDF scanner. All vehicles had much of their contents scattered about the vehicle. Police are encouraging all citizens to light up their neighborhoods and report any suspicious activity to 306-848-3250. Citizens are also encouraged to report any vehicle entries whether items are missing or not.
*On July 21, police received a report of a domestic dispute and located a 27-year-old female and a 31-year-old male having an altercation. The male threatened to shoot himself, so firearms at the residence were seized for safe storage. Both parties declined to make reports about the incident. Police left the scene without further incident.
*Police received a report about a fight outside of a local bar involving two males. Reports indicate that a knife may have been used during this altercation. The matter is still under investigation.
*Police received a call about a 19-year-old suicidal female who was reported to have taken a bottle of pills. Police gained access to her residence and transported her to the hospital for medical attention.
*Citizens are advised to be aware of a potential computer scam received from individuals claiming to reimburse Microsoft users for unused services. It is important not to provide these individuals with any personal information or give them access to your computers, banking or credit card information. *A 39-year-old female and her family were driving by a local bar when a sign was thrown at their vehicle. They confronted a 29-year-old Alberta resident and three others about their actions and were met with racial insults. As the family was leaving, one of the three unknown males banged on their windows and broke the side mirror. The matter is still under investigation.
