Police warn of telephone fraud

On November 2, Police received a report of a hit and run after a witness had observed a truck back into a parked car in a store parking lot and then drive away. Police later located the offending vehicle and the driver, a 64 year-old male, was charged with failing to report an accident.

On November 1, members of the Weyburn Police Service conducted a vehicle stop after witnessing the vehicle fail to stop for a stop sign. The driver, a 32 year-old male, was found to have been drinking. The investigation resulted in the driver receiving a three day roadside suspension.

Also on November 1, members of the Weyburn Police Service located a vehicle stopped at the intersection of First Avenue NE and Government Road with the driver slumped over behind the wheel. The driver was visibly impaired and was arrested and transported to cells. As a result of the investigation the 48 year-old male was charged with impaired driving and driving while over .08. The accused was later released and will appear in court at a later date.

Further on November 1, the Weyburn Police Service attended to a local hotel after receiving a complaint of a mischief. The hotel owner had found damage to a room after the guest had checked out. The incident remains under investigation.

On October 30, Police received a report of a motor vehicle accident on Government Road. The accident occurred after one vehicle had stopped for a train and the following vehicle failed to stop in time and ran into the back of the stopped vehicle. The driver of the lead vehicle suffered minor injuries. The accident remains under investigation.

Also on October 30, Police attended to a two vehicle accident at the corner of Fifth Street and Prairie Avenue. Although significant damage to the vehicles occurred, there were no reported injuries. No charges were laid in the accident.

On October 29, members of the Weyburn Police Service attended to a local business after a disagreement between the business manager and a delivery person became heated and there were allegations of an assault. The investigation into this matter is ongoing.

On October 28, Police received a report of a theft from a vehicle. The vehicle, a commercial anhydrous hauler, while parked on the south end of the city, had an anhydrous hose stolen. The incident remains under investigation.

On October 27, members of the Weyburn Police Service attempted to stop a suspicious vehicle. The vehicle failed to stop and accelerated, resulting in a pursuit which left the city going west on Highway 13 at a high rate of speed. The vehicle pursuit was discontinued due to safety concerns. A person of interest has been identified and the investigation into the incident continues.

Also on October 27, the Weyburn Police Service received a report of a theft of a truck which had been parked in the south end of the city. The truck was later found burnt in the south end of the city. The investigation into this incident continues.

On October 26, Weyburn Police Service members were dispatched to attend to a resident in the east end of the city, regarding a male being unlawfully in a dwelling. Police located an extremely intoxicated male in the house. The 21 year-old male was arrested for Breach of the Peace and lodged in cells until sober.

Also on October 26, the WPS received a report of a telephone fraud. The victim had received a call that they had won a lottery but to claim the prize they needed to send some money through Western Union. The victim realized it was a scam so did not send any money. Members of the public are reminded these types of frauds occur periodically and no one should send any money to someone or some organization which you do not know. If the situation appears too good to be true, it probably is. If in doubt, please contact the Weyburn Police Service.
