Reports of secret shopper fraud

The Weyburn Police Service have received more than one complaint about a fraud involving what is called the “Secret Shopper” fraud.

The victim has answered an employment ad on-line and is provided with a kit and instructions on how to be a secret shopper for the company. The victim is provided with a cheque which they deposit, and then make purchases and return the items and cash to the company.  The original cheque provided is then found to be fraudulent and the victim is out the money and property.
Police urge people to be very cautious when embarking on such an employment venture and perform their due diligence prior to spending any of the money given to them.
During their weekly calls, police received a complaint of a domestic assault that happened at a local business on Nov. 24. As the result of the incident the 39-year-old female victim transported herself to the Weyburn General Hospital where she was examined and released.
A 41-year-old male has been charged with assault and has been released on a no-contact order and will be making a court appearance.
The police were dispatched to a report of a disturbance at a local pub on Nov. 25. Upon arrival the incident had partially resolved itself.  Two local men, ages 42 and 54, were sent home. The 25-year-old male victim was happy with the resolution with no further action being required.
Police received a report that a local business had been defrauded of in excess of $320,000 on Nov. 27. The investigation is still in the early stages and will involve multiple agencies.
That same day, police received a report of a theft of tools from a local business. One suspect description is: Caucasian male, five-foot and eight-inches tall, 170 pounds, black rim glasses, black toque with ‘misfits’ written on it and wearing a black and red coat.
On Nov. 28, the police were called to a report of a hit and run collision in the 600 block of King Street. The suspect vehicle is described as: black two-door car with a spoiler, possibly a Cavalier. This vehicle struck a fence and fled the scene.
Police responded to a report of a domestic assault occurring in the residence between a 48-year-old male and a 49-year-old female on Nov. 29. The matter was successfully mediated with no further police involvement.
As a result of a traffic check on Dec. 1, a 65-year-old male was arrested and charged with driving over .08 and driving without a valid licence. His vehicle was seized for 60 days and he will be making a court appearance.
As December is upon us the members of the Weyburn Police Service will be making extra effort to keep the roads safe from drinking drivers. Local residents can expect to see checkstops and random checks around the city during the entire month.
Meanwhile, the Fillmore RCMP reported they were called when a man was trapped inside a grain bin at the Fillmore seed plant. Two men were working inside one of the commercial bins when one was trapped at the bottom of the bin; they were rescued with the assistance of Fillmore and Stoughton fire and ambulance services.
The two men were transported to hospital so they could be treated for non-life threatening injuries.
