Rocanville town council approves rec parking lot project

Revamping of the lot expected to cost $274,000.
Rocanville

ROCANVILLE — A substantial re-paving project is currently happening in the Town of Rocanville, essentially from the school to the recreation centre. And it’s going to take three crews to complete the work. The project went to tender in three portions, and town council awarded contracts during their regular meeting on April 23.

“That entire parking lot is being dug up a little bit, properly sloped to the street, with new rollover curb and paved this summer,” explained Administrator Tanya Strandlund. “It went out for tender, and we have now awarded the contracts.”

Based on lowest bid and best schedule, Copper Ridge Construction won the curb replacement portion of the project, Carnoustie Operating Ltd. won the earthworks contract, and All Season Asphalt Services was awarded the paving contract. The entire project will cost $274,000.

Council approves petting zoo

The Nutrien Family Day is still months away on Sept. 6, but council received a request to allow a temporary petting zoo during the event.

“They have to not have it located on pavement, and have to take full liability and responsibility for anything that comes from having animals,” explained Strandlund. “We have approved to have them in town for the day, which is going to be exciting.”

Curb removal

A curb removal request for 102 Carlton Street was also approved by council.

“Just to create a double parking spot on their property versus parking on the road, which helps everybody,” Strandlund explained.

Fire department budget

The Rocanville Fire Department presented their 2025 budget to council last week, noting an expense of $120,992.74.

“A big portion of that is their upgraded new truck that had already been approved,” Strandlund explained. While a slight increase compared to previous years, the number of fire calls the Rocanville crew responds to is a large factor in their budget.

“We have a lot of respect for the fire department and what they do, and First Responders in the area,” Strandlund said.

Generator repair quote

A new coolant level sensor was needed for the generator at the Rocanville lift station, with a repair quote from Nixon Electric approved. The repair will cost $1,165 plus applicable taxes and installation.

“It’s a very old generator, so it’s kind of hard to source some of these parts, hence the reason we have also approved the install of a new natural gas backup generator there,” Strandlund said. “But in the meantime, we still need this generator to operate.”
