Soup is on hold until volunteers increase

Organizers of the monthly "Soup's On" event have had to cancel the benefit luncheon this month due to a lack of volunteer help at the preparation level.

In order to make the event possible each month, a host of volunteers must make bread, soups and desserts, cook turkeys, eggs and so on, logging many hours prior to the Soup's On day.

"Unfortunately, our volunteer base is no longer able to accommodate the success of Soup's On without more volunteers coming forward to help in the preparation stages," said Gina Bowler of the Soup's On Committee. "When the many step forward, few have to do a lot and much is accomplished. But when few step forward, they eventually burn out because they do the work of many."

Bowler said that they are hopeful that the situation will reverse itself this August when the group will be canvassing the community for more volunteers, with the intention of resuming the luncheons in October.

"It is our hope and prayer that we may be able to continue this worthwhile fundraising venture this fall, but without more volunteer help, we do not see how this will be possible," said Bowler.

So far, Soup's On has raised and donated more than $22,000 to the Weyburn and District Hospital Foundation.

"We want to thank all of our volunteers and supporters who have made this possible," said Bowler.
