Souris School nutrition program boosted by donations

The nutrition program at Souris School has had some big boosts, as they seek to ensure every child attending the school has enough to eat.

The nutrition program at Souris School has had some big boosts, as they seek to ensure every child attending the school has enough to eat.

The Young Fellows Club recently donated $500, and on Thursday, Vermilion Energy’s Shane Pollock came by with a donation of $2,000 for the program.

On Friday, the Prairie Animal Health Clinic also added a donation of $675, with Crystal Ruckaber and Kristin Caldwell presenting the donation.

Also on Friday, Jerry Mainil Ltd. supervisors and office support staff donated $1,020 in the name of their bosses, to help top up their needs. Two of the three company owners were present for the donation, Dale Mainil and Calvin Tracey, with Dennis Mainil being the third owner. Mainil employees present in the photo included Kent LaCoste, Chad Ror, Dan Bradley, Kevin Linnen, Andy Williams and Jimmy Laboccetta.

The program provides for a nutritious breakfast every morning to any student who wants it, plus fruits and vegetables are provided to supplement the lunch of any student who needs it.

In addition, if a student comes to school without a lunch, a lunch will be provided, said principal Maryanne Kotylak.

The breakfast club was established in 2012 at Souris, as school administrators believe a healthy breakfast positively influences student health and academic achievement.

The benefits are felt in the classroom, at home and in the community as students are able to reach their potential, have improved energy levels and have enhanced problem-solving skills, creativity, concentration and behaviour.

On average, Souris serves 60 breakfasts each school day, 35 lunches and 40 snacks.

In addition, the school teaches basic cooking skills in the kitchen, as they believe the kitchen is a learning lab where the children can learn and have fun as they knead, toss, pour, smell and cut up food as they learn how to prepare various simple recipes.

They can also learn social skills by working together and communicating in the kitchen.
