(L-R) Mrs. Haupstein and her Grade two class posed on the Souris School playground structure on June 18 with teaching assistant Mrs. Jensen, vice president of development for the Weyburn Credit Union Mel Hoffman and Souris School Community Coordinator Shannon Seitz. WCA presented the school with $7,500 toward the cost of a new playground structure, which will be constructed this fall.

Souris School will receive a new Henderson play structure this fall. A number of businesses have been contributing to the fundraising, which requires $65,000 plus the costs of gravel. A $10,000 Community Initiatives Fund kicked off the process and then they reached out to community organizations. The Weyburn Credit Union was the first to respond with a $7,500 donation, which was presented on June 18.

"Our $7,500 comes from the Weyburn Credit Union Community Fund and it's a fund that we grow one per cent of pre-tax profits every year so that we can help projects like this - multi-year, large dollar-volume projects, and to just help improve the quality of life for the citizens of Weyburn and in this case the students of Souris School."

The school is close to their goal, requiring only another $3,500 for the building of a new structure, which will also include wheelchair accessibility. The structure will extend from the school to the south fence, which is substantially larger than the current outdated, unsafe structure.

This is the only playground on the hill that has play apparatuses that are also appropriate for smaller children, therefore it has been in need for quite some time.

After Souris gets a new playground, other schools will likely see the opportunity to raise funds to update their own structures. Eventually, in stages, Souris will fundraise to replace the swing sets and monkey bars, as well as installing an outdoor water fountain.

"It's definitely a five year project and the playground is the first big step," said Seitz.

Any businesses interested in sponsoring the project either through cash donation or through gravel donation, please contact the Souris School Community Coordinator Shannon Seitz at [email protected].
