Students from St. Michael School will be doing “chores for charity” in support of the “Mending Little Hearts Fund”, after fellow student Brasen Sim told them about his own heart condition, along with his sister Ember.

At a school assembly on Thursday, Brasen told the students, “I was born with a heart condition. When I was a baby, I had surgery where a cut was made into my leg and and a tube inserted into my heart to help open a squished valve. Although my valve leaks now, I can do almost anything any other kid can do.”

He will need open heart surgery one day to replace the heart valve, he explained, and talked a bit about the Mending Little Hearts group.

“They have been able to provide equipment to the hospital and they have also provided funding for equipment that allows heart children to be at home with their families. This fund has also supported research that is advancing treatment of heart conditions,” said Brasen, adding that all money raised in Saskatchewan stays here.

Brasen has been able to attend a “Champs” camp with assistance from this fund.

“February is heart month, and many schools are doing fundraisers for the Mending Little Hearts Fund. Our school is doing ‘chores for charity’. You just have to do a chore for someone for their donation,” explained Ember, noting that whenever a student brings in a donation, their name will be put on a heart and placed on the wall in the hallway near the school gym.

“Let’s fill the walls for heart month,” added Brasen, encouraging students to “put your hearts into your chores to support heart children of Saskatchewan.”

The Mending Little Hearts Fund is a designated charitable fund created in partnership with the Jim Pattison Children’s
