Update: Fire strikes home in northeast Estevan

Nobody was injured in a fire Thursday night in northeast Estevan.

The Estevan Fire Rescue Service, the Estevan Police Service and the Estevan Emergency Medical Services were called to the fire in the 600-block of Isabelle Street at 10:50 p.m. Once the fire department arrived on scene, it was confirmed that there was a structure fire on the property, but the fire was at a double-detached garage in close proximity to a single-family dwelling.

“Once crews arrived on scene, they did note that there was structural compromise already occurring, so incident command established defensive firefighting techniques as opposed to entering the structure itself,” said Fire Chief Dale Feser.

Some of the shingles on the home were starting to heat up, so a defensive suppression stream and exposure protection were immediately established to save the home from fire.

The fire department was able to bring the fire under control about 15 minutes after arriving on the scene. Two vehicles were damaged in the fire, but nobody was injured.

Feser noted that the homeowners – two adults and a young child – were sleeping at the time of the fire. They were woken up by a neighbour and able to safely exit the home.

The home suffered light damage, and could still be occupied, but the residents spent the night in a hotel so they could sleep while the fire department continued its investigation.

Fire crews remained on scene until about 1:20 a.m.
