The warning was issued at 3:53 p.m. Saturday afternoon, and is due to a powerful storm that is expected to hit Estevan over the next couple of days. A potent winter storm will bring heavy snow, wind, and a risk of freezing rain on Sunday.

A powerful low-pressure system will move into the Prairies Sunday night. Moderate to heavy snow will begin Sunday morning and continue through to Monday. Snowfall totals as high as 30-50 centimetres are expected in some parts of the province; a tweet from Environment Canada says the Estevan area will receive 20-30 centimetres.

Moderate northerly winds will develop and produce periods of reduced visibility in blowing snow Sunday into Sunday night. Some regions may also see a risk of a mix of snow and freezing rain.

Conditions will remain extremely poor Sunday night before the system departs on Monday.

Environment Canada asks people to consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve. Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow. Prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions. Visibility will be suddenly reduced to near zero at times in heavy snow and blowing snow.A winter storm watch was issued for the Estevan area on Friday. That watch has now been lifted.

The Mercury will have more details as they become available.
