Minister responsible for the Public Service Commission Don McMorris and Provincial Secretary Nadine Wilson laid wreaths in the provincial capital during the annual Service of Remembrance for civil servants on November 5.
"We express our utmost gratitude to all of the brave men and women from our Armed Forces who have participated in conflicts and military operations around the world for generations to keep us safe," McMorris said. "Saskatchewan people have a proud history of serving their country and defending the freedoms we too often take for granted."
This year marks the centenary of the beginning of the First World War (1914 to 1918) and the 75th anniversary of the start of the Second World War (1939 to 1945).
"Let us not ever forget those who made the ultimate sacrifice and the families they left behind," Wilson said. "We owe these individuals a debt we can never fully repay. It is our duty as citizens to honour them."
Wreaths were laid inside the rotunda of the Legislative Building and another was placed outside at the Saskatchewan War Memorial along Memorial Way in Wascana Park.
The Saskatchewan War Memorial, originally dedicated in 1995, lists the names of Saskatchewan's fallen from the First World War, Second World War, Korean War, peacetime operations and the Afghanistan Mission. The names of approximately 11,000 soldiers and civilians with ties to Saskatchewan who have perished in these conflicts are enshrined on the Memorial.
