The upcoming fundraiser concert for the Triple C Centre, featuring the RCAF's Command Brass and Pipes and Drums, will have a special salute to local veterans as a feature of the event.
The concert will be held on Monday, Oct. 1, at the Comp School Cafetorium, with the program getting underway at 7:30 p.m.
As part of the salute, veterans who never finished their high school education due to the Second World War will be presented with honourary Grade 12 diplomas, the first time that the Weyburn Comprehensive School has ever done this.
An organizer of the concert, Joanne Bannatyne-Cugnet, a member of the Triple C Centre committee, said she is hoping for "standing-room only" for this concert, not only to support the Triple C Centre, but in support of the veterans who are being so honoured.
"Bob King (Triple C member) found out about this from a Rotary Club in the U.S. recently, where they honoured vets who were never able to finish their high school when they returned from war," said Bannatyne-Cugnet. "I think this will touch a lot of people."
Comp principal Wade Oberg will make the presentations to the vets, the first time the high school has ever awarded honourary degrees. Photos of the recipients will be put up in the high school along with the class photos of the grads.
"These will be people you know, from the community," said Bannatyne-Cugnet, noting this will be a joint effort between the Triple C Centre committee and the Weyburn Legion.
If there are other veterans in the community who should also be thus awarded, who weren't able to complete their Grade 12 due to service for their country, they should contact Bannatyne-Cugnet or the Legion.
She added there will be also an announcement a significant donation to the Triple C Centre made at the concert.
As for the concert, ticket sales have been lagging, and organizers are hoping to have a full Cafetorium for the evening of music and the tribute to the veterans.
Weyburn is the only Saskatchewan stop for the RCAF brass band, and the Comp's Concert Band will also perform in this unique fundraising concert.
Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 at the door, and students can get in for $10. Tickets are available at Superior Office Products, Total Effects Day Spa, or the Weyburn Co-op Food Store.
Command Brass is an outstanding chamber ensemble, featuring brass quintet instrumentation, including two trumpets, a tuba, a French horn and trombone.
The Pipes and Drums of the RCAF is the first and only full-time professional group of bagpipe and pipe-drum musicians in the history of the Armed Forces.
